Lessons from a Baseball Mastermind – Jerry Weinstein Joins ‘And That’s The Game’ with Wayne Mazzoni

Welcome to Another Game-Changing Edition of ‘And That’s The Game’ with Wayne Mazzoni presented by ProBatter Sports.

Baseball has always been more than just a game—it’s a lifelong journey for players, coaches, and enthusiasts alike. Few embody this more than Jerry Weinstein, the guest on this exciting episode. With a career that spans decades, Weinstein has made an impact from high school coaching to professional baseball and beyond.

At 81 years old, his insights into the game are as sharp as ever, making this episode a masterclass in baseball wisdom.

A Storied Career in Baseball

Jerry Weinstein’s journey in baseball began humbly, growing up in Southern California. As a child, he spent endless hours at the local park, playing a variety of sports. By high school, he focused on football and baseball, showcasing his versatility as an athlete. But it was coaching, not playing, that would become his true calling.

While still in high school, Weinstein began coaching youth league teams. By 15, he was balancing playing in competitive leagues while coaching others—a pattern that would continue throughout his career. After a brief stint as a player at UCLA, he transitioned fully into coaching, starting with the freshman team at his alma mater.

Early Coaching Foundations

Weinstein’s first significant coaching role came at Santa Monica High School, where he simultaneously coached football and baseball. His talent and dedication soon landed him a position at Sacramento City College, a role that would define much of his career. Over 24 years, he transformed Sacramento City into a baseball powerhouse, producing over 30 Major League players and setting a standard for excellence.

The program’s success wasn’t just about winning games—it was built on a commitment to player development. Sacramento City College players benefited from rigorous schedules, including hundreds of at-bats and competitive internal practices. Weinstein’s approach emphasized personal growth, discipline, and skill refinement, ensuring his players were prepared for professional or collegiate opportunities.

Breaking into the Big Leagues

Weinstein’s expertise caught the attention of Major League Baseball. In 1980, he became one of the first catching coordinators in professional baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers. Over the years, he worked with multiple organizations, including the Dodgers and Rockies, and even managed Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic. His innovative methods and ability to adapt to new technologies, such as analytics and video analysis, set him apart in the coaching world.

Despite opportunities at the highest levels, Weinstein always prioritized environments where he could focus on development. Whether coaching in the minor leagues or mentoring young catchers, his goal was to create better players and better people.

Building Better Players

Jerry Weinstein’s approach to player development revolves around two key ideas: self-awareness and fostering a strong process. For players, he stresses the importance of taking ownership of their growth. This means seeking out reliable information, finding the right resources, and understanding that development isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Each player needs to figure out what works best for their unique needs and focus on steady, incremental improvement instead of chasing quick fixes.

For coaches, Weinstein underscores the need to prioritize long-term development over immediate results. He believes effective coaching requires:

  • Detailed practice planning that aligns with each player’s goals.
  • Individualized player plans that address strengths, weaknesses, and potential.
  • A competitive yet supportive environment where players feel both challenged and encouraged.
  • Continuous learning as a coach to stay ahead in an ever-changing game.

Embracing Modern Baseball

Weinstein’s ability to embrace technology has been pivotal in his career. From using video analysis to studying pitch mechanics, he believes data can enhance player development—if used correctly. However, he cautions against overwhelming players with too much information, stressing the importance of filtering data to focus on actionable insights.

This balance between traditional coaching and modern analytics is exemplified in his current role with the Chicago Cubs. As an assistant to the general manager, Weinstein continues to share his decades of experience while contributing to the Cubs’ data-driven approach to player development.

Never Stop Learning

Weinstein’s journey is a testament to the power of passion and continuous learning. Even at 81, he remains deeply engaged in the game, inspiring players and coaches alike. His willingness to adapt, mentor, and innovate has left an indelible mark on baseball at every level.

More Than Just a Game

This episode of And That’s The Game highlights not just the career of a baseball legend but the principles that have guided him. From the sandlots of Southern California to professional dugouts, Jerry Weinstein has demonstrated the value of dedication, adaptability, and a commitment to helping others succeed. Whether you’re a player, coach, or fan, his story offers valuable lessons on pursuing excellence in any field.
